During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent visit to Ireland, drones were reportedly observed near his flight path, raising security concerns. Zelensky, accompanied by First Lady Olena Zelenska, arrived in Dublin late Monday for a one-day official visit. The Irish Defence Forces, in collaboration with An Garda Síochána, ensured the visit proceeded without incident.

Security Alert Triggered by Drone Sightings

An Irish navy ship detected up to five drones operating near the expected flight path of President Zelensky's aircraft. This sighting, reported by Irish and Ukrainian media, triggered a significant security alert. Despite the potential threat, unnamed sources confirmed that the aircraft, which arrived slightly ahead of schedule, was never in danger.

Ukrainian and Irish Responses

Ukrainian officials, including an adviser to Zelensky, acknowledged the presence of drones but noted that they did not necessitate any changes to the visit. "According to their data, there were indeed such drones, but this did not affect the visit," said the adviser. The Irish Defence Forces refrained from commenting on the specifics of the incident but emphasized their successful support of the security operation.

No Investigation Underway

Currently, the Garda Síochána is not conducting an investigation into the drone sightings. A spokesperson stated that any incidents occurring in Irish waters fall under the jurisdiction of the Defence Forces. The drones were initially spotted northeast of Dublin, approximately 20km from the airport, as reported by local news outlets.
