Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has announced his intention to stand in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election, a move that could position him for a potential leadership challenge against Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Andrew Gwynne, who stepped down due to health reasons. "I owe it to a city which has given me so much to lead it from the front, despite the risks involved," Burnham stated in his letter to Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC).

The committee's decision is anticipated soon, with some of Starmer's allies reportedly seeking to block Burnham's candidacy.
