Spanish prosecutors have decided to drop the investigation into sexual assault and human trafficking allegations against renowned singer Julio Iglesias, citing jurisdictional limitations. The decision comes after two former employees accused the 82-year-old artist of creating a coercive and abusive environment at his properties in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

Allegations and Legal Proceedings

The allegations surfaced following a comprehensive three-year investigation by Spanish media outlets elDiario.es and Univision Noticias. The two women, who worked as a domestic worker and a physical therapist, claimed they were subjected to inappropriate touching and harassment. The complaints were filed with Spain's Audiencia Nacional, the highest criminal court, but were dismissed on the grounds that the alleged offenses occurred outside Spain.

Jurisdictional Challenges

Spanish prosecutors emphasized that the legal principle of universal jurisdiction could not be applied as the complainants were neither Spanish citizens nor residents. They further noted that the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas have the authority to investigate the claims. Advocacy groups, including Women's Link Worldwide and Amnesty International, underscored the vulnerability of the complainants, who were described as being in economically and socially precarious situations.

Iglesias's Response

Julio Iglesias, a legendary figure in Latin music with over 300 million records sold, has vehemently denied the accusations. In a statement on Instagram, Iglesias expressed his deep sadness over the allegations, asserting, "I have never abused, coerced, or disrespected any woman." Friends and associates of the singer have also come forward to defend his character.
