Kyiv faced a night of unprecedented aerial bombardment as Russian forces launched a record 550 drones and 11 missiles, causing widespread destruction across the Ukrainian capital. The assault, which Ukrainian authorities described as one of the most severe, left a pall of smoke hanging over the city and resulted in at least 23 injuries. The strikes targeted multiple districts, damaging railway infrastructure and igniting fires in residential areas.

Intensified Russian Airstrikes

The latest attack on Kyiv is part of a series of intensified Russian airstrikes that have escalated in recent weeks. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the drone strikes affected six of the city's ten districts, with debris setting a medical facility ablaze in the Holosiivskyi district. The Svyatoshynskyi district saw fires break out when drone debris hit a warehouse, while the Solomanskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts also reported significant damage. Residents took shelter in subway stations as air defense units worked tirelessly to intercept the drones.

Diplomatic Stalemate

The airstrikes came shortly after a phone call between former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which failed to yield any progress towards ending the conflict. Trump expressed his disappointment, stating, "I'm very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I don't think he's there, and I'm very disappointed." The Kremlin reiterated its stance on addressing the "root causes" of the war, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks, calling for tougher sanctions against Moscow.

Ukrainian Counterattacks

In response, Ukraine launched its own drone attacks on Russian territory, targeting the city of Sergiyev Posad near Moscow and the southern Rostov region. The attack in Sergiyev Posad injured one person, while the Rostov strike resulted in the death of a woman. These counterattacks highlight the ongoing tit-for-tat nature of the conflict, which has persisted since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Concerns Over US Weapons Supply

Amid the escalating violence, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his intention to discuss the supply of US weapons with Trump. This follows Washington's decision to halt some critical shipments, prompting concerns in Kyiv about its defensive capabilities against intensifying Russian assaults.
