In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, eleven Nigerian military officers were briefly detained in Burkina Faso after their aircraft made an emergency landing without prior authorization. The Nigerian Air Force C-130, en route to Portugal, was forced to land in Bobo-Dioulasso due to technical issues, according to Nigerian officials. However, Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger, members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), condemned the landing as a violation of their airspace and sovereignty.

Unauthorised Landing Sparks Diplomatic Tensions

The incident occurred on Monday, with Burkina Faso's Territorial Administration Minister, Emile Zerbo, confirming the airspace breach. The AES, in a joint statement, described the landing as an "unfriendly act" and warned of future measures to neutralize any aircraft violating their airspace. Despite the diplomatic strain, the Nigerian Air Force assured that the crew received cordial treatment and plans to continue their mission to Portugal.

Regional Instability and Military Interventions

This airspace violation comes on the heels of Nigeria's military intervention in Benin, where Nigerian warplanes supported President Patrice Talon against a coup attempt. The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), with Nigeria at the forefront, deployed troops to restore order, highlighting the region's ongoing political instability. The AES, having distanced itself from Ecowas, criticized the bloc's interventions, accusing it of Western influence.
