A surge in violence has gripped southern Syria, with Israeli airstrikes targeting the Syrian defense ministry in Damascus, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The strikes, which occurred on Wednesday, were part of Israel's intervention in clashes between Syrian government forces and Druze fighters in Suweida province. This region has witnessed deadly sectarian violence, with over 350 fatalities reported since Sunday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Sectarian Violence in Suweida

The recent unrest was triggered by the abduction of a Druze merchant, leading to fierce clashes between Druze militias and Sunni Bedouin fighters. The Druze, an Arabic-speaking ethno-religious minority, have historically occupied a precarious position in Syria's political order. The community, which makes up about 3% of Syria's population, has resisted integration into the Syrian army, relying instead on local militias for protection.

Israeli Intervention and Military Strikes

Israel's military intervention, including airstrikes on Syrian tanks and the defense ministry, has been justified as a protective measure for the Druze community. However, this has added complexity to the conflict, with many Druze wary of being perceived as a foreign proxy. The Israeli strikes have resulted in significant damage to the defense ministry, collapsing four floors and injuring 18 people.

Fragile Ceasefire and International Concerns

Despite a ceasefire announced by the Syrian government and one of the Druze spiritual leaders, tensions remain high. Another Druze leader, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, has vowed to continue fighting, describing the government as "armed gangs." The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to address the escalating situation, underscoring the international community's concern over the potential for a broader sectarian conflict.
