Renewed violence has erupted along the contentious border between Thailand and Cambodia, resulting in at least six fatalities and numerous injuries. The latest clashes, which began on Monday, have intensified the long-standing territorial dispute between the two Southeast Asian nations, leading to widespread civilian evacuations and educational disruptions.

The conflict, which has seen both sides blaming each other for the hostilities, marks the most severe confrontation since a ceasefire was brokered in July by former US President Donald Trump. Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that his country "never wanted violence" but would take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty. In contrast, Cambodia's former leader Hun Sen accused Thai forces of provocation, labeling them as "invaders."

Impact on Civilians and Education

The clashes have forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of civilians from border areas, with Thailand alone moving 438,000 people to safety. In Cambodia, similar measures have been taken to protect residents. The violence has also led to the closure of nearly 650 schools across five Thai provinces, disrupting the education of thousands of children. Thai teacher Siksaka Pongsuwan expressed concern over the impact on students, noting that children living near the border are "losing opportunities and... precious time."

The century-old dispute over the 817-kilometer border, which includes contested ancient temples, has seen a significant military build-up. Both nations have increased their military presence, deploying snipers, heavy weapons, and fortifying positions. The Thai Navy reported detecting Cambodian forces in Thai territory, prompting military operations to expel them. Cambodia, however, claims it has not retaliated despite coming under sustained attack.
